Start Eating Healthier step by step (Step 2)

You are here and it means you already know that healthy eating is important so I will save us some time and will go straight to the point.

In one of my early posts, I mentioned how 4 years ago during a regular check up with a doctor my husband was advised he will become diabetic sometime in next 6 months to a year. Lucky us the doctor was not one of those who will send you a bag of pills and hope for the problem to be fixed.  We had a long chat about our diet. and even that my test results came out perfect, we were together in it and if we will start eating healthy why not to do it together?

I see in movies, tv series, and even real life all the time. When dad has to eat a special diet that will make him healthier and it is some not at all attractive looking dish while all the family is eating fried chicken, rice and pancakes.

This is just plain wrong!!!! and in so many ways.

1. A member of your family was just told what he eats will kill him and has to change it. Why would you still eat it or feed it to the rest of the family?

2. Why is that food is so bland in color and looks ugly and nasty?

3. Why present in a negative way a dish with veggies?

Anyway, I can go on and on and don’t let me start about how all that teaches our kids that healthy food is not tasty and it is a suffering.

So after a talk with a doctor, we were to cut on specific items like rice, pasta, bread (and all related products).

There were several articles over the internet several years ago about how the wheat grain has been genetically modified on the world wide level in order to fight hunger.  New grain was made with special characteristics which will give you necessary sugar and energy from the small amount of bread so you can be filled faster with a smaller portion. Of course, nobody paid attention to that small portion part. We all kept eating our bread as we used to and it started making us sick. Now doctor confirmed that.

We used to eat rice and bread every day. Pasta at least one a week and we absolutely LOVE sandwiches.  I have to mention we have had started several diets in our lives and they all didn’t work. and we came to the point of understanding that special strict diet just doesn’t work. You can agree or disagree it is totally up to you but in my experience, once you finish the diet you will go and eat all you could not eat for a long time and it will not stop at just one bite. So I decided to cut on those items gradually. We did eliminate rice and pasta and left it for when we eat out as we are lovers of a good risotto and pasta (which I don’t cook) but the bread was a real issue.   I decided to start purchasing a higher quality ray bread. not the one that comes from some processing facility but the one they

And here is how we did it:

I decided to start purchasing a higher quality ray bread. Not the one that comes from some processing facility but the one they bake it locally.  They would sell it as half of the loaf. and then we imposed the rule to eat one of those halves in a week. We could eat it all in one dinner or we can stretch it over a week, the point was that this is the only bread we will have in a week.

It worked!!! At 6 months check up appointment my husband was taken out of diabetic risk. At that moment we already were advanced with not eating bread all the time and that half loaf would last us up to 2 weeks and I had to put it into a fridge. And guess what? we started slowly losing weight. It was more noticeable on my husband as he is a bigger than me and has more weight to lose.

And guess what? We started slowly losing weight. It was more noticeable on my husband as he is a bigger than me and has more weight to lose.  I have to say we also got lucky to be living in a place with endless summer and lots of fresh veggies around and it was easy to just prepare a salad with a piece of chicken.

As a food lover, I need my food to look beautiful and picture worth. at the end, we all eat with eyes first.

So here are some final points from today’s post:

  1. Bread, rice, pasta is not good. they don’t have a real nutritional value.
  2. Don’t cut on you favorite items at once. do it gradually setting a maximum amount to consume during a week.
  3. Don’t be afraid of consuming all your weekly budget of pasta in one day, but respect the rest of the week.
  4. Do not buy more than a weekly budget that you set for yourself.
  5. After a month if you feel your weekly budget is still big, cut it a little.
  6. Start a journey with a friend or a partner, eat together, cook together.
  7. Make your food picture worthy.

Remember this is not about suffering, it is about slowly get to be a healthier you.
